Robert Schumann: Genoveva Overture
Einar Englund: Violin Concerto
Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 1
Robert Schumann's Genoveva is the composer's only opera. The opera's overture was atypically composed before the opera was completed and was also performed in concerts even before the opera's premiere. It is also atypical that the overture does not contain direct references to the rest of the opera's music, but rather creates the atmosphere for the opera.
Einar Englund is said to have created the voice of young composers who experienced war in Finland. Englund experienced the horrors of war himself at the front and it has been said that all of his compositions contain something of this experience. The violin concerto, which is one of the composer's most linear and lyrical works, will be interpreted by Otto Antikainen. This young violinist, one of our country's talented musicians, was the only Finn to reach the finals of the 2025 Jean Sibelius Violin Competition. In addition to his competition success, he has performed as a soloist with many different orchestras – including in Mikkeli.
Conductor Charles Olivieri-Munroe, who was born in Malta and raised in Canada, will close the program with Johannes Brahms's First Symphony. Brahms first heard Beethoven's 9th Symphony in 1854 and then decided to compose his own symphony. Brahms worked on his First Symphony for a long time, and it only took its final form in 1876. Since then, the symphony has been one of the core works of symphonic literature.
